LASER HAIR REDUCTION

Laser assisted hair reduction is an extremely effective and efficient way of removing unwanted hair on various areas of the body and face.   Presently we are using a series of treatments at predetermined intervals to effectively reduce hair growth.

Traditional methods of treating unwanted hair such as shaving, waxing, and chemical depilation are temporary.   Electrolysis is the only non-laser technique that can offer permanent eradication of hair follicles.   However, published studies demonstrated a 15-50 percent recurrence.

Understanding the growth cycle of hair is important to understanding laser treatment parameters for hair reduction.   Anagen follicles are actively growing, catagen follicles are in a transition phase in which active hair growth does not take place, and telogen follicles are in a resting phase.   These hair growth phases vary in length depending on area.

Hair reduction by laser is achieved by delivering a destructive dose of energy to the germinal area of the hair follicle.   It will be effective only if done during the anagen phase of the hair growth.   Since hair follicles are in various growth phases at any one time, multiple treatments with the laser are needed to destroy as many hair follicles in the anagen phase as possible.   To achieve long term hair reduction, the follicles must be in the anagen phase to be treated with the laser.

We use the long pulse Neodynium:Yag Laser for hair reduction.   This is the most effective, efficient, and versatile wavelength available to treat hair follicles.   This wavelength treats all skin types and most hair color except white or gray.   We ask patients to shave the area(s) to be treated 48 hours before, unless hair growth is very rapid, then the night before.

Treatments are 4-6 week intervals.   Maximum hair reduction requires 6-12 treatment sessions.   Additional treatments may be needed.

Post treatment care is minimal, requiring sunscreen to exposed skin, moisturizer and avoidance of sun exposure.   Some redness and slight swelling may be present, but should resolve within hours or days.   No application of deodorant for 48 hours following treatment of underarms.
